He brought his girlfriend to watch his wife sign the divorce papers. She signed in two minutes, smiled, and told him what her father did that morning.

Danielle walked out of that hotel lobby with her head up, heels clicking on the marble.

Terrence just stood there. The signed divorce papers were still in his hand.

"Five hundred million dollars," Brielle whispered next to him. "Did she really just say five hundred million?"

Terrence didn't answer.

He was replaying the last ten minutes.

He'd planned this. He wanted Danielle to see him with Brielle. He wanted her mad, embarrassed, ready to run. So he pushed the papers across the table and said, "Instead of dragging this out, just sign it and leave."

Terrence sat down hard on the velvet couch.

Harold Carter's company. Carter Freight. Forty trucks when Terrence married into that family. Four thousand trucks now.

And Terrence worked there. Regional vice president. A job he only got because he was Harold's son-in-law.

"Babe," Brielle said, rubbing his arm. "It's fine. You still have your job, right? Your salary?"

Terrence pulled out his phone.

An email was already sitting there.

From: Danielle Carter, Chief Executive Officer, Carter Freight.

Subject: Your position.

His thumb was shaking when he opened it.
