I finally brought her home to meet my family. She took one look at my stepdad and said one word.

Nobody at the party moved.

Fifty guests. A champagne glass in every hand. Soft music still playing. And right in the middle of the room, four people who had forgotten how to breathe.

Jordan looked at his girlfriend. Then at his stepdad. Then back at Amara.

"What did you just say?"

Amara's eyes were wide and wet. "Dad," she said again, quieter. "That's my dad."

Vincent took off his glasses. This was the man who'd raised Jordan since he was nine. Taught him to drive. Sat in the front row at his graduation.

"Yeah," Vincent said. It came out like a whisper. "She's my daughter."

Then he looked at Jordan.

"And you're my stepson."

Jordan's mom, Celeste, put her glass down so hard it cracked.

"You have a daughter?" she said. "Vincent. You have a daughter?"

Guests suddenly got very busy with their phones. Somebody turned the music up. It didn't help.

"Not here," Vincent said. "Please, Celeste. Not here."

"Then where?" Her voice went up. "Where do you want to explain that you have a grown child I've never heard of? In fifteen years of marriage?"

Amara was shaking. Jordan reached for her hand, then stopped. He didn't know if he was still allowed to.

"I didn't know he was your stepdad," Amara whispered. "I swear, Jordan. You always just called him Vince. I never saw a picture."

"Because he hates pictures," Jordan said. His own voice sounded far away.

Celeste turned to the room.

"Thank you all for coming," she said, with the worst smile Jordan had ever seen. "The party's over."

Ten minutes later, the house was empty except for the four of them in the living room.

Vincent stood by the fireplace. He looked older than Jordan had ever seen him.

"I'll tell you everything," he said. "But first you need to know something about Amara's mother."

He took a breath.

"I didn't leave her. She left me. And she took Amara with her."
