"For the next two weeks," Walter said, "you'll work the morning shift at that restaurant. Same uniform as everybody else. Same pay. Keisha's your manager."

Nobody at the table moved.

"You're joking," Brandon said.

"I'm seventy-three, Mr. Cole. I quit joking about people a long time ago."

Brandon thought about walking out. Then he thought about forty million dollars. And then, weirdly, about the old man's face yesterday, holding that torn paper bag.

"Okay," he said. "Two weeks."

Day one, he burned his hand on the fryer and cried in the walk-in freezer where nobody could see.

Day three, a woman screamed at him because her order was wrong. It wasn't even his mistake. He stood there and took it. And for the first time in his life, he knew how that felt.

By week two, he knew the regulars by name. The guy who came in at 6 every morning was a night-shift nurse. Keisha was raising two kids and taking accounting classes at night.

On the last Thursday, Walter walked in. Same faded shirt.

Brandon took his order himself.

"Number 06," he said, and handed him the bag with both hands. "Have a good one, Mr. Hayes."

Walter smiled.

The deal was signed that Monday. Brandon stayed on as CEO. The first thing he did? He gave every worker at that restaurant a raise, out of his own pocket.

And Nia?

She called the number on Friday, just like he said.

A woman picked up. "Hayes Foundation, scholarship office. Congratulations, Ms. Johnson. Mr. Hayes has asked us to cover the rest of your law school tuition."

Nia had to sit down. Right there on the sidewalk.

Later she asked Walter why.

"Because when everybody in that room looked away," he said, "you didn't. That's the kind of lawyer this world needs."

Brandon still thinks about that day. The day he yelled at a stranger over a bag of fries and almost lost everything.

"The finest suit can't make you a great man," Walter told him once. "A good heart can."

Brandon's still working on the heart part.

So who taught him the bigger lesson: Walter, Nia, or Keisha?

Who taught Brandon the bigger lesson?
